Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway construction contract awarded

YELLOWKNIFE (January 10, 2014) – The contract for the Northwest Territories’ largest infrastructure project is to be awarded to a company based in the territory. A notification of acceptance and authorization to begin construction of the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk all-weather highway has been issued to EGT-Northwind Ltd., with a formal signing of the $229.3 million contract to follow.

Construction of the highway is expected to be completed by 2018. Construction will take place primarily in the winter months to protect the underlying permafrost.

Minister of Transportation Tom Beaulieu says the contract that has been negotiated with EGT-Northwind offers good value and the opportunity to further develop the capacity of NWT businesses and residents. “The contract that is to be signed with EGT-Northwind reflects their experience in the North. It reflects their commitment to hire northerners and to work with other northern businesses,” the Minister said. “The Government of Northwest Territories will support training and development opportunities arising from this project, to the benefit of all NWT residents.
